Socio-economic promotion of disadvantaged women in the Dissin department, South-West region, Burkina Faso

The overall objective of the project, whose duration is envisaged to be 15 months, is represented by the affirmation of the role of woman in the society of Burkina Faso, in order to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal number 3 (to ensure equal opportunities between the two sexes and an appropriate socio-economic development of women), while the specific object is to improve economic conditions and, consequently, social conditions of Burkinabe woman in the department of Dissin – Ioba province, South-West region.

What has been done

  • training courses focused on the consolidation of knowledge related to new production techniques and the modern systems of agricultural management, monitoring cycles of agricultural activities carried out by 300 beneficiaries and the establishment of ten “round tables”.
  • training courses focused on the consolidation of knowledge related to the mechanism of credit offered by the project, evaluation of credit requests, definition and distribution of loans, credit recovery, monitoring of agricultural and commercial financed activities.
  • training courses focused on the consolidation of knowledge related to the mechanism of informal collection of savings proposed by the project and monitoring cycles related to the good functioning of the formed groups, organization of meetings aimed at strengthening the role of woman in the management of the household budget.
  • dissemination in the regional territory of information about the program through innovative channels, organization of two public meetings focused on the presentation of the project results and on the promotion of intercultural dialogue between Italy and Burkina Faso.

The direct beneficiaries are 300 women living in the villages of Bagane, Benvar, Dissin Peri, Foro-Tew, Gawgbow, Kpomane, Mou, Tovor, Wizine, Koi (Dissin department, province of Ioba, South-West region):

  • They have consolidated technical-management skills in the agricultural sector;
  • They have enjoyed an easier access to credit; they have increased the productivity and, consequently, the profitability of agricultural activities;
  • They have increased the ability of saving; they have adopted a participatory management of the household budget by promoting equality between the two sexes.

The direct beneficiaries – already involved in some of the activities that the local partner of the project, the association Faa I Tuora, realize in the areas of intervention of the program – have be chosen on the basis of the following elements:

  • number of individuals of the nuclear family;
  • presence in the family of sick, not self-sufficient, unable to work persons and, therefore, contribute to the family budget;
  • general economic condition.
